What Is Remote Online Notarization?

RON allows you to appear before a commissioned online notary using a secure audio-video platform.

Identity verification, document signing, and notarization take place electronically, eliminating the need for the signer and notary to be physically in the same location.

For clients outside the United States, that can mean completing an eligible U.S. notarization from a home, hotel, office, marina — or wherever business happens.

Real Estate Doesn't Stop Because You're Overseas

One of the most common reasons someone abroad may need a U.S. notary is real estate.

Buyers, sellers, investors, and property owners don't always happen to be in the United States when documents need to be executed.

Depending on the transaction and receiving party's requirements, eligible documents may include deeds, affidavits, powers of attorney, seller documents, estate-related property documents, and other closing paperwork.

Instead of coordinating international shipping or trying to locate an appropriate notarial service abroad, RON may allow the notarization to happen online.

Private Aviation, Yachts & Maritime Transactions

High-value assets move. Their owners move even more.

Private aviation and maritime transactions can involve buyers, sellers, brokers, attorneys, lenders, escrow professionals, and other parties located across multiple states or countries.

When an eligible document connected with an aircraft or vessel transaction requires notarization, RON can provide another option for getting it completed without requiring everyone to be in the same place.

This may include certain affidavits, powers of attorney, entity or authorization documents, transaction documents, and other attorney-, lender-, escrow-, or broker-directed paperwork requiring notarization.

Not every aviation or maritime document requires notarization, and requirements vary by transaction. But when your attorney, escrow professional, lender, agency, or receiving party tells you, “We need this notarized,” being overseas doesn't necessarily mean the transaction has to stop.

When Notarization Comes Before an Apostille

This is another situation where international clients often find themselves needing a U.S. notary.

An apostille and a notarization are not the same thing.

Depending on the type of document and where it originated, a document intended for use in another country may first need to be properly notarized before it can be submitted to the appropriate authority for an apostille or authentication.

That can create an awkward situation when the person signing the document is already overseas.

When the document is eligible for Florida Remote Online Notarization and the notarization will be accepted for its intended use, RON may allow that first step to be completed remotely.

Traveling Internationally With Children

Not every international notarization involves a multimillion-dollar transaction.

When a minor travels internationally with only one parent, alone, or with another adult, certain destinations may require written consent from the non-traveling parent or legal guardian — and some countries require that consent to be notarized.

Requirements vary by destination and circumstances, so travelers should always verify the requirements of the destination country and applicable airline or travel provider.

When a notarized minor travel consent form is required and eligible for RON, remote notarization can make completing it considerably easier — particularly when the parents aren't currently in the same location.
